The topic for this blog was set! Or at least that’s what I thought!? At church a few weeks back a sweet couple in their mid-70s being interviewed, asked the question, “How will you use the time you have left?” They realized they probably had about 20 years left. So they asked, “If you know you have 20 years left, what will you do?”
They have decided to invite folks to read the Bible with them, informally and just talk, to initiate as many conversations around Scripture as possible. Call them Discovery Bible Studies, if you like. Or simply asking the question, “What do you hear from God when you read this text?” So, when I first sat down to write this month’s blog, I thought I should write about… “Time is ticking away: how should we make the best use of these years.” Then I looked back one year: we already wrote that!!!
What happens when you “count the problems that you see”? In the song, “I’m so blessed” Cain sings, “Hope looks all but gone. But when I count the ways You’re good to me, You got me counting all day long! So we shift gears and consider counting blessings. We have a summer assignment for you.
Take a few minutes and read Ephesians 1:3-14 and simply make a list of the blessings you receive from being “in Christ.” These are not material blessings, but spiritual blessings. We would love to hear back from you:
- Which blessing is most significant to you and why?
- How is your life different because of these blessings?
- Which of these blessings will you share with a friend or neighbor and how will do you plan to share?
- How does Paul describe life “outside” of Christ in Ephesians 1-3?
We invite you to revel in these truths as you journey through the months ahead.
