Why do we exist as families? In our quest to provide resources for families on mission, have we raced past an obvious need?

In a stress-filled world with demands and influences pulling in every direction,  would it make a difference in raising children and grandchildren to stop and ask the question: “Why do we exist as a family?” or “What’s our family identity?” We might ask, “What do we value as a family?” Have you considered writing, posting and living by a “Family Mission Statement?” A family mission statement is a written declaration of a family’s core values and goals. It can help guide decisions, improve communication, and create a sense of unity and purpose. Let’s share some ideas.

When we moved to Texas and started attending The Hills church in Fort Worth, one of the questions we asked ourselves was, “How do we get involved in such a large church?” We needn’t have worried! Our good friends, John and Anita Royse to the rescue! “You will simply help us in the parenting ministry!” That’s how we came to know about “Parenting From The Tree of Life”. As we co-facilitated that curriculum, the idea of developing a family mission statement was given as an assignment for the class. The challenge was given to meet as a family and together draw up guidelines to live by and then post them in a conspicuous spot in the kitchen where they would be seen daily. These ideas could be pointed to on a regular basis to evaluate growth, behaviors and attitudes. Imagine my delight, once when dropping some items off at the home of one of the couples from that class, to discover on their kitchen wall:

“The Shelby Family Mission Statement”

We will seek God’s Kingdom and His righteousness first by pursuing:…

  • An abiding life by practicing Spiritual Disciplines, staying connected to Jesus and producing the Fruit of the Spirit;
  • A connected life by moving towards community, discipling and service relationships with family and friends;
  • A healthy life by eating well and engaging in sports, exercise and other activities;
  • A creative life by drawing, painting, writing and playing the piano;
  • A curious life by fully engaging in discovery, learning, reading, fun and other people and places;
  • A gritty life by working hard, doing our best at work, school, & home learning from our mistakes no matter how we feel.

Now it’s your turn! Let us know how writing and posting a Family Mission Statement makes or has made a difference in your home.

You can start with “Our family exists to glorify God!”

Let’s continue to “think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.” (Hebr. 10:24 NLT)
